ny fashion week ss09 - days two and three and four

Let me try an recap days 2, 3 and 4 of fashion week here:

My favorite was Matthew Williamson. His collection was something I could see myself wearing, it was pretty and colorful, casual and very girly.

Next best was Charles Nolan. Now this collection was chic and also something I could see myself wearing, but for a more elegant occasion.

And how can you not love a designer that brings Dara Torres to the runway!

For classic elegance, Carolina Herrera did not disappoint.

An interesting swimwear collection by Gottext

Jill Stuart
was all about grays and neutrals and floating dresses.

Jonathan Saunders used a lot of strong and vivid colors... a refreshing change from the mostly neutral/black/white predominance of other collections.

And Marc Jacobs, ah Marc! What are you doing Marc? What are these things? Costumes?

There is no doubt that Marc Jacobs is good at what he does.

But sometimes I think designers get caught in the "I can do no wrong" phase, or in the "What I say, goes" which then mixed with the "I got to be original" curse produces monsters like these ones. And before you even scroll down, let's play a game:

You have a first date with this guy you have been dying to go out with, but you can only pick one of the following 4 Marc Jacobs outfits. Which one would you pick? You also have a fifth choice to reschedule.

Number 1

Number 2

Number 3

Number 4

But Marc wasn't the worst. Oh no. The worst are these below.

Proenza Schouler.

I think these guys pulled a Milli Vanilli.

It must have gone something like this:

Last season the collection was beautiful and everybody was in love with them. Then at a party someone suggested they all play Pictionary (it was a trap!) and when nor Proenza nor Schouler could even hold a pencil, let alone draw something, the cat was out of the bag.

So, with the talented (but uncool) designers gone, this season is really the awesome duo behind their collection, and it shows:

And I have no idea why Thakoon is in the fashion industry when he should really be designing bedding sets for Laura Ashley (now watch Laura gets insulted)!
