Have you noticed how us women go through necklaces phases throughout our lives? And how these phases are intimately connected with our age, our social status and our attitude towards the world?
I've already written about the symbolism of big necklaces here, but this post wishes to delve deeper...
If you are anything like me, you've started wearing necklaces as soon as you could grab one out of your mother's jewelry box.
In the beginning, anything worked: I remember one of my favorite ones from her collection was made of big round wooden beads, beads the size of grapes and deep red in color (Yikes!).
But as soon as we get to pick our very first necklace, we go for something along these lines: sweet, pink, with cute characters that we can talk to.
It's just us and the necklace, nothing else exists, and all is well with the world.
During the first school years we learn that there are colors other than pink, and we want to wear them all!
Life is fun and happy.
At around 12 (give or take some years) we become very aware of our surroundings and of other people. We need to communicate and want to be heard.
We pick necklaces to send a message and to help us define us.
Later we'll receive our first heart necklace from a sweetheart, and for the first time we'll experience the rush of gold and diamonds, and the pride of wearing such a coveted item.
The world is still beautiful.
Not long after the first heartaches and life's disappointments, we develop a defiant attitude. We hate the world and want to shut everyone out. Skull necklaces are perfect for this phase.
We become rebellious and even reject the gold and the diamonds, for something "cooler", like silver, or cord necklaces!
We just don't care.
Then comes the time in our life when a ring becomes more important than any necklace.
Dreams are possible again.
Now we are more sofisticated.
We become more selective.
The world is our oyster.
To the point that solitaires are not enough anymore.
Only 3 stones and above, please!
By the end of our journey, if we have enough money, this is the stuff we'll probably want to wear.
Big with lots of diamond and sparkle!
And as in a full circle, it's just us and the necklace again.
Nothing else exists.
Unfortunately, the progression to more and more precious materials and stones sends us a clear message: as we get older, we "feel" we need something bigger and better to keep all eyes on us.
But remember that if you cultivate the inside, you won't feel as much pressure to constantly embellish the outside.
